Money Saving Tip! - In the Diaper Years...

Though I never attempted cloth diapers on my own children, I might have had I heard Sarah's perspective 7 years ago when my oldest was a baby...

Sarah, new to the coupon saving game (and loving every minute of it), is a wife to a wonderful husband and mama to one 11-month-old bundle of energy!

As if that isn't enough to keep her busy, she also works part-time as an attorney while her daughter gets to play and be spoiled by all of her in-town grandparents. Sarah has found lots of ways to save as a new mom, including cloth-diapering, making her own baby food as well as homemade cleaning supplies.

Read on to hear more about Sarah's money saving tips during the diaper years!

For all you parents out there with young children, you know that one of the most expensive parts of the baby years is diapering. All those disposable diapers and wipes sure do add up, even when you can find coupons! When I had my first child, I decided to go part-time at work in order to be at home with my daughter as much as possible. With the drop in our family income, we needed to find a lot of ways to save and we found one money-saving-solution in choosing cloth diapers for our daughter.

If you've never thought about cloth diapers for your little ones, I encourage you to check out all the options that are out there in the cloth diapering world. Believe me, I never thought I would consider using cloth, but now, I not only enjoy the cost savings, I love putting Caroline in those soft, cute & colorful diapers! The question I always get is about the laundry – it really isn't bad, y'all. I do a couple extra loads a week, and that's about it.

Now, here's the info on the savings. The average cost per child for using disposables is $2,000 to $3,000. Our family spent about $500 for thirty cloth diapers (enough for around three days) and cloth wipes, and we didn't even buy the cheapest diapers out there. We love the Fuzzi Bunz brand, which are adjustable and will fit her until she's potty-trained. Pocket diapers, like Fuzzi Bunz, are also just as easy to use as disposables... no diaper pins or covers to mess with (even our wonderful nursery workers at church are comfortable changing our daughter's cloth diapers). Best of all, not only are we saving a ton of money on our first child, we can reuse these diapers for any future babies we may have... think double, even triple the savings!

If your interest is tweaked, then check out www.diaperjungle.com for good and in-depth information. You'll be amazed at the ease and options available – have fun!

CVS Pharmacy 101

Are you new to the CVS Game? You might not think of CVS as a place to save money in your shopping venture. However, there is a system to shopping strategically at stores such as CVS and you might even end up making money! Let me help you get started by sharing how I've learned to pay little to nothing for items such as toothpaste, shampoo, razors, toothbrushes, bathroom tissue, paper towels, facial cleanser, deodorant, and so much more!

I've set this post up in a Q&A format, so I hope it answers most if not all of your questions on how CVS's coupon system works.

Q: What types of coupons can I use at CVS?
A: CVS accepts manufacturer coupons as well as store coupons. You may use 1 of each per item that you purchase. For prescription purchases, CVS will honor competitor coupons as well.

Q:
Where can I find the store coupons?
A: CVS store coupons can be acquired several ways:
  • Email: When you register your CVS card at CVS.com, you will periodically receive store coupons via email, such as $4 off your $20 purchase and others.
  • CVS Price Scanner Machine (in-store): Simply scan your CVS card at the price scanner machine in your store and coupons will print out the side for you to tear off and use. These are completely random coupons and everyone seems to get different selections.
  • CVS Reinventing Beauty Magazine: This is a magazine put out by CVS and can usually be found in the magazine racks or near the cash registers. It costs $.99 and contains multiple CVS and manufacturer coupons inside.
  • Clip-Free Monthly Coupon Booklet: You do not need to clip the coupons in this booklet in order to receive the savings, but you will need to have your cashier scan your CVS card! These booklets are usually found near the weekly fliers in-store.
Q: Does CVS offer a reward program?
A: Yes. CVS has a wonderful reward program that offers money back in the way of ExtraCare Bucks (ECB's); i.e. CVS money. Simply sign up online at www.CVS.com/ or in-store for a free CVS ExtraCare card and be sure to have your cashier scan it with every purchase. You'll earn money back just by using the card!

More on the ExtraCare Card:
Each time you use your ExtraCare card, 2% of your total out-of-pocket expenses is credited to your ExtraCare account. You also earn 1 Extra Buck (ECB) for every 2 prescriptions purchased. This "money" is printed at the end of your receipt once every quarter.

Q: What are ECB's?
A: An ECB is an ExtraCare Buck. This is CVS money that prints out at the end of your receipt when you purchase certain items or for your quarterly earnings. This is like cash, so you don't want to lose it! ExtraCare Bucks are good on your NEXT purchase. "Roll" your ECB's to purchase the same item over and over until you reach the limit. This way you are spending very little to nothing out of pocket.

Q: Does CVS issue Rainchecks if they are out of an item?
A: Yes. Simply ask your cashier or store manager for a raincheck on the item. If the item included an ECB deal, be sure to ask you cashier to write down the ECB code found in that week's circular. You will be able to purchase the item when it returns in-stock and still receive the ECB.

Be sure to check out my weekly post every Saturday for the
"Best Of" CVS Deals
for the upcoming week. This is a must before you head out to shop!

Walgreens 101

Are you new to the Walgreens Game? You might not think of Walgreens as a place to save money in your shopping venture. However, there is a system to shopping strategically at stores such as Walgreens. Let me help you get started by sharing how I've learned to pay little to nothing for items such as toothpaste, shampoo, razors, toothbrushes, bathroom tissue, paper towels, facial cleanser, deodorant, and so much more! I've even been known to make money on these purchases!!

Be sure to read Walgreen's Coupon Policy.

I've set this post up in a Q&A format, so I hope it answers most if not all of your questions on how Walgreens coupon system works.

Q: What types of coupons can I use at Walgreens?
A: Walgreens accepts manufacturer coupons as well as store coupons. You may use 1 of each per item that you purchase. However, you must purchase the same number or more items as the number of coupons you are using. Keep in mind that a Register Reward (listed below) is also considered a coupon. For example, say you have 5 items, you cannot use 6 coupons on that transaction. You'll need to find a filler item (something in the clearance section or a pack of gum) under $1.00.

Q: Where can I find the store coupons?
A: Walgreens store coupons are found in several places:
  • Weekly Ad: Found in-store usually at the front as you walk in.
  • Monthly Coupon Booklet: Found near the weekly ads in-store. This contains coupons that are good throughout the month. Each month a new booklet is released.
  • Email: Sign up at www.walgreens.com/ to receive coupons straight to your inbox.
  • Diabetes & You Magazine: This is a FREE magazine distributed by Walgreens and you can usually find it near the pharmacy. It contains health-related coupons as well as diabetes-related articles and coupons. Not all coupons are store coupons. You will find manufacturer coupons as well inside.
*You only need to use 1 Walgreens store coupon even if you're purchasing several of that item. The register will automatically ring it up for the amount of items that apply to it.

Q: Does Walgreens offer a reward program?
A: Yes, and you don't even have to have a special card to swipe! Walgreens' reward system works as a money-back system called Register Rewards. Each week, they offer items throughout their weekly ad that will generate these Register Rewards.

Q: What are Register Rewards?
A: Register Rewards (otherwise known as RR's) are Walgreens money. They will print out of a separate "Catalina" machine near the cash register. RR's are a way of Walgreens giving you money back for certain items that you purchase and are then usable on your NEXT purchase. This is like cash, so you don't want to lose it! When matched up with coupons, you will often find that you're getting the items for FREE (after RR) or even making money in conjunction with coupons!

More on Register Rewards:
Only one RR will printer per item per transaction. That RR may then be used in your NEXT transaction on the purchase of a different item. If that RR is used to purchase the same item, another RR will not be issued. They may not be used to purchase the same item in which you received the Register Reward from. The best way to use your RR's is to purchase another Register Reward generating item with it. You can continue to "roll" these RR's and you may never pay a penny out of pocket at Walgreens again!

Q: Wait! I didn't get my Register Reward... What went wrong?
A: If you followed all of the rules above and still feel that you should have received a Register Reward, you can call Walgreens Customer Service at
1-800-925-4733 to request it by mail.

Q: I've heard there is an order in which I should give my coupons to the cashier. Is this true?
A: Yes. To avoid beeping registers, you'll want to give your coupons to your cashier in the following order:
Register Rewards ~ Walgreens Store Coupons ~ Manufacturer Coupons

Q: Does Walgreens issue Rainchecks if they are out of an item?
A: Yes. Simply ask your cashier or store manager for a raincheck on the item. Register Reward items, however will only produce RR's the week of the sale.

Be sure to check out my weekly post every Saturday for the
"Best Of" Walgreens Deals
for the upcoming week. This is a must before you head out to shop!

Deals at Walmart...

It's rare that I go out of my way to do coupon deals at Walmart. I'm usually only shopping there for store-brand items that are cheaper than anywhere else. However, here are a couple of items I've found to be a decent deal at Walmart...

$1 off Scott Naturals Bathroom Tissue, 4 pk or larger
These are $2.68 at my Walmart, making them $1.68/1 after coupon.

$1 off Yoplait YoPlus Yogurt
These are regularly around $2.12 at my Walmart, making them only $1.12/each after coupon!
I've tried a lot of yogurt in my coupon venture, and this is one of my favs!
