My Favorite Thing

My favorite thing this week...
is my sewing machine!

This was a gift from my Aunt a few years ago and though I've only used it a handful of times, I am excited to start using it on some new projects I want to make. It's just a basic machine, but that's all I need. My mom has sewn since I was a little girl and recently my daughter asked me to teach her how to sew. I thought what better way for me to teach her but through example? I like to make EASY clothing, and have made Easter dresses and pajama bottoms for the kids. Until I get better, I'm sticking to the easy patterns. I want to try some quilted bags and other accessory items like the ones I found HERE at Pink Penguin.

Homeschool Mondays

Looking for arts and crafts ideas that don't cost a lot of $$??

I have discovered a wonderful magazine called Family Fun. I got the idea for my 2 daughters' birthday cake while through flipping the pages of this fabulous magazine while I waited for a doctor's appointment one day. Though it may not be exactly like the picture in the magazine, I thought it turned out pretty great (considering I've made only sheet cakes up until now).

Check out their website HERE to find great arts and crafts ideas that you can do with your kids. I thought about subscribing to their magazine (and I might still), but when you can find all these great ideas on their website, why would you pay money for it?!

My CVS Deals!! Profitable!!

Today turned out pretty good at CVS! They were only out of stock on one item I needed, but my deals worked great without it, so I'm not complaining.

Coupon Preview

There, I've revealed it. Yes, I'm a Gator fan!
I usually post this on Saturday, but since I was driving home from the Gators vs Ole' Miss game... bummed... I was a bit preoccupied.

So, in case you're headed out to grab a paper, but you don't know how many to get based on the coupons you'll receive, check out these websites first!

Keeping the Kingdom First

Taylortown Coupon Preview

Today's newspaper should have 3 inserts. The normal 2 - SmartSource & RedPlum - but also the P&G, which is usually packed full of great coupons you're sure to use.

I normally get up to 6 papers when there's a P&G.

Then Sings My Soul...

My pick this week for this post is an amazing song from Chris Tomlin called God of This City. I like so much of his music, but this one is special to me with a mission emphasis. I love praise songs that truly praise our God and allow us to look forward to how we can be instruments in His perfect plan.

If you've never heard this song, I encourage you to click on the YouTube below and just allow God to work in your heart.

Things to remember when shopping at Walgreens:
  • They accept store coupons in conjuction with manufacturer coupons.
  • Weekly flier coupons ring up multiple times for the amount of items you are purchasing that pertain to that coupon. In other words, there is no need for multiple flier coupons for several purchases of 1 item.
  • Only 1 Register Reward per deal will ring up on each transaction. (i.e. If you plan to get the Dimetapp $10 RR's several times, you'll need to purchase them in different transactions. You will only receive 1 $10 RR per transaction.) However, if you are getting different RR deals in 1 transaction, this will not be a problem, and they will all print out.
  • You may use RR's from one item to purchase the same item again, however you will not receive additional RR's for the 2nd purchase.

Quick Pumpkin Pudding

It never ceases to amaze me how many neat ideas Gayle from The Grocery Cart Challenge comes up with! This week, you can learn how to make your own yogurt. I never learned all these little secrets, so I'm constantly amazed. Thanks, Gayle!

Have I mentioned that I LOVE the Fall?! Well, I'm also a sucker for pumpkin desserts, so my contribution to the Recipe Swap this week is:

Quick Pumpkin Pudding
  • 1 pkg (5.1 oz) vanilla instant pudding mix - Jell-O is often on sale at Walgreens
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk - $1/3 IPQ HERE
  • 1 can (15 oz) pure pumpkin
  • 1 tsp pumpkin spice
  • whipped cream for topping
Beat pudding mix and evaporated milk according to package directions in a large bowl; refrigerate for 5 minutes. Add pumpkin and pumpkin spice; mix well.

Spoon into dessert dishes. Refrigerate for 10 minutes or until serving. Top with whipped cream.

Yield: 8 servings

Publix Coupon Policy

I had a nice chat with my local Publix Store Manager. And I thought I'd pass along the information she gave me on their coupon policy.
Remember that coupon policies can vary by store and each Store Manager has the right to refuse a coupon.
  1. Publix accepts one Store coupon and one Manufacturer coupon per item. A store coupon is defined by one of the following: Publix store coupon OR Competitor store coupon.
  2. For BOGO Sales, you may use coupons on both the Buy One AND the Get One Free Item. Use the coupon policy stated in #1.
  3. $/$$ coupons are allowed one per transaction. These may come to you via mail or email from Publix or other competitors. $/$$ from competitors are also accepted.
  4. If a coupon states that you receive an item for FREE, you may not use additional coupons to discount the FREE item further. Publix does not allow overage with coupon use. This means that you may not make money back when using coupons.
  5. Lastly, each Publix store manager has the right to choose which stores are considered competitors, so be sure to check with your store manager to find out what coupons they will accept. It's worth a little time to find out so that you can save!

Discount Stores

Let us not underestimate the savings of simply shopping at the lower cost stores. I get so wrapped up in shopping with coupons nowadays that I sometimes forget that there are equal and sometimes lower prices when I shop at stores like Dollar General, Dollar Tree, or Big Lots. So, this post is not so much about coupons as it is about savings.

I stopped by my local Dollar General last night while waiting for our Chinese food pick-up, and found many items marked down in their clearance section. All of their summer items are SUPER cheap at cents to dollars. To give you an idea of what you can expect, we found a butterfly net for $.30 (great for our Fall nature walks), shaded swimming pool for $1.25, and lots more beach toys, swimming vests, etc. for similar prices. If you like to shop at the end of the season for items to use next year, you'll want to check out Dollar General.

Dollar General will accept 1 coupon per item, whether it be a Manufacturer coupon or Store coupon issued in weekly fliers. They will not stack coupons.

Believe it or not, my first job was at Dollar Tree! The pay was higher than minimum wage, so what 16-year-old wouldn't want to work there?! You'll notice when you walk into Dollar Tree stores, there are signs EVERYWHERE telling you that everything is $1.00. Despite massive signage, I still had multiple people ask me daily if everything is $1.00. So, for all of you doubters out there, yes, everything is still $1.00. :) In fact, some items like candy bars and gum are 2/$1.00. Oh, the beauty of cheap! You may not all know that this is a great store to purchase generic plastic bags, gift bags, partyware, holiday decor, and general cheap kids toys. I don't know that I would recommend purchasing the food though... not sure how long it took since packaging to make it to the store.

Dollar Tree does NOT accept coupons of any kind.

Big Lots is another one of my favorite discount stores. You never know what you might find when you go! We've purchased bunkbeds, school items, cookware, toys, sheets, and more. We used to live very close to a Big Lots and I would frequent it on weekly basis, but now it's a bit of a drive. I like to get holiday decor and gift packaging here as they always have unique items.

I am unsure of Big Lots coupon policy. Does anyone know?
**UPDATE: Thanks to Shynea at Penny Pinching Diva - Big Lots does accept 1 manufacturer coupon (non-printable) per item. Check with your local Big Lots store for any exceptions.**

Homeschool Monday - Enjoying the Outdoors!!

So, my tip for today as it gets cooler outside is to simply spend some time outdoors with your kids. God's creation is one of our best tools for learning and teaching!

We have a kiddie table in our back yard, which the kids sat at and we did school. Even if you don't have a table, porch, etc, throw a blanket on the grass and have a fruitful school time outside today!

Here is a picture of our craft for the day.
We made little brooms out of the pine needles that continue to fall in our back yard. It was a great opportunity to teach the kids how God has given us so much in nature to enjoy. We're also collecting the pine cones that fall for a Christmas arrangement in the winter!

I just LOVE the outdoors this time of year!!!

Please share your tips or link to this one on how you enjoy the Fall and homeschooling! I love to hear from you!!

Then Sings My Soul...

Music has been a passion of mine since I was a child. In fact, while I was praying for a husband many years ago, one of my "selfish" desires was to find a man who loved music and could play guitar. He answered my prayer and then some! I, myself love to sing, but my amazing husband plays drums, guitar, bass, and most recently has impressed me with his skills on our new piano. Perhaps I'm a bit jealous of his creative talent...

Anyways, I wanted to share with you a band I found through Mommy Snacks, named Addison Road. Being an at-home mom and wife, I don't get as many opportunities as I used to to find new amazing bands, so I was excited to hear of this one. Their lyrics are wonderful and the style is right up mine.

  • You are not allowed to use RR's from one item to purchase the same item again. The register will refuse it. In other words, you must use RR's toward the purchase of different item than what gave you the RR's originally. Does that make sense??

Target Savings!

Word has it that Target has marked down all of their school supplies! They're probably getting ready for the Fall and Christmas season. Check out Julie's blog at Coupon Saving Family for more on what you can find!

HERE'S THE SCOOP!

I've found out some new coupon policies that I was not previously aware of, so I thought I'd pass them along to you. They may vary by store or region, but just something to keep in mind!

Publix
Will not be accepting fixed price coupons (i.e. Walgreens puts out $.99 for Joy Dish Detergent Q's), as this is too much work for the cashier to go back and fix/adjust the price. They will, however, continue to accept $$ off Q's from Walgreens and the like.

CVS
Will not accept any coupon that does not ring up in their system. I came across this when I tried to use the $2/$10 Q and apparently it no longer scans.

Lovin' the Fall!!

We are only a weekend away from the official start to the Fall season!

Growing up in the North gives me very fond memories of hayrides, pumpkin patches, horeseback riding, cider mills, and more. Fall has always been my favorite time of the year, and even living in Florida now, I can feel the weather getting slightly cooler in the mornings. We play outside more, go on longer walks, and enjoy the crisp cool air.

What is your favorite part of the Fall?! Please share in a comment or link.

Passover Cookies

One of the blogs I enjoy reading is Gayle's at The Grocery Cart Challenge. She is super frugal with her family of 6 living out in the Pacific Northwest. Gayle always has great tips on how to save money, and how to use all of your resources. Every week she has a Recipe Swap, which I have enjoyed, so here's my contribution this week.

This is a recipe from my Sister-In-Law. She is an amazing cook and has the best Italian meatballs and sauce I've ever tasted!! She made these for us on one of our visits, and I found they are quite addictive. They're not too sweet, and once you eat one, you'll love 'em!

Passover Cookies
  • 4 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup oil (I always use canola with this recipe)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup port wine or grape juice (have always used the grape juice)
  • 2 cups of matzo meal (approximate)
Whisk together eggs and oil. Beat in sugar and salt, blending thoroughly. Blend in grape juice and 2 cups of matzo meal adding a little more matzo meal if necessary to make a soft dough.

Shape mixture into balls, in portions of about 2 tablespoons each. Place on lightly greased baking sheets and flatten somewhat to form patties.

Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes until lightly browned and done.

Yield: About 2 dozen cookies

My Publix Deals

Last night I had my list all typed up with Q's, pricing, etc. and in wrangling the kiddos, I completely forgot to SAVE my document... All day long, I was so relieved to have it all done and expected be able to wake up this morning and go shopping! Well, far from it... Our computer froze up last night and we were forced to shut it off. I couldn't find my document anywhere! So, guess how I spent my morning?... I'm exhausted! Today was a crazy day and I will tell you upfront that my deals are indeed deals, but I overspent by quite a bit. Thankfully, we've been underspending these past couple of weeks, so hopefully it won't affect the budget.

I got so much that it took 2 pictures to get all the detail!

The Treasure Principle

Our church is studying this book, The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn, in our small groups and I am loving it. If for no other reason, God has used it in my life to draw me nearer to Him. However, it is more than that as He is also using this book to teach me a better perspective on money and where we are to fix our eyes. Life gets busy and hectic with 3 kids, homeschooling, and trying to fit everything in. And unfortunately, my walk with the Lord was suffering terribly.

(I've added a link to my sidebar of this blog if you're interested in learning more about this book.)

I was excited to find out that we were studying this book, and have used it along with the study guide as my morning devotional time. I've always wanted to take the Crown Ministries class or Dave Ramsey course, but have never found one available that didn't fill up before I got the chance to sign up.

I'm finishing up studying chapter 1, as we started a bit late. It is based around a wonderful parable that Jesus uses in Matthew of what the kingdom of Heaven is like:

Matthew 13:44
"The kingdom of Heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field."
